Dogwood Blossoms – Chapter 4: Stories, p.11-17

Dogwood Blossoms, Chapter 4: Stories, p.11-17

Goodness gracious, I'm updating Dogwood. It's been two years since the last pages were uploaded. Yeegh. Gomen nasai, mina-sama.

Even when I'm trying to be faster, I'm a slow comicker. And I don't know if anyone will like me after this update, it's not exactly a happy one...

So the question is, would y'all prefer if I kept up this system of updating in several-page chunks, or would you rather I came out with a page at a time as I finish them?

The several-page chunk is better for reading, but I have to get all the pages done at once, which at least this time caused me lots of trouble. Spreading them out does feel like spreading the work out a bit, a least with this. What do you think?

Creator’s Note, October 1, 2023:

What’s my plan with Dogwood Blossoms? For now, the story is abandoned. Apologies, readers!

Comics are labor intensive, and I’m not able to justify the amount of work required for a fan project that I can’t claim complete ownership of. I did learn a lot, and I created some of the most complex art I have ever done for this project.

I still love the story and it’s been spinning in the back of my mind for two decades. I want to do a serial-number-scrub revamp, and rework the story to be original and in prose. (I’m a little faster as a prose fiction writer. A little.) There will be dragons.

But until then, please enjoy the pretty art and the horrible cliff-hanger. 😅

Acknowledgments and Disclaimer: The fate of no one historical was changed by the making of this comic. Inuyasha-tachi belong to Takahashi Rumiko and everyone she has sold them to. This is a mostly nonprofit fan work that I’m really slowly putting too much work into because I'm a pathetic period-accuracy purist. All historical inaccuracies are the fault of myself--some deliberate, the rest out of ignorance. There is only so much time a girl can put into research for a fan project. Many thanks to the beta group for their help and suggestions.

  1. I like viewing it in several pages. It makes the story flow better for me personally. Love this set hope you can update again soon I love the story! 🙂

    1. I’m so glad you like it!
“Several page updates” seems to be the consensus. 🙂

  2. Even if it is easier to read in bigger chunks, it wouls be nice to see what’s going on more often. Maybe you could update five-siix pages separately, as they come and then add a several-pages chunk for the people that prefer it that way? Everyone would be happy then…

    1. “Several page updates” seems to be what most prefer. 🙂 I might try your idea, though. Or maybe 3 at a time, rather then 7…

      Thanks for reading and commenting!

  3. I had forgotten about this, but after rereading it I really like it. Maybe 3 pages at a time?

    1. I’m glad you like it! I may give that 3 pages thing a try. 🙂

  4. OMG yayy for the update! 🙂 Im still here lol
    Cant wait for another update!

  5. Thank you so much for updating!! I love this story and have missed it.

Wow…I actually love the way you handled WW2…I’ve often thought it’d be interesting to know what the “youkai” of anime stories would have done during the war. Not surprising that proud Sesshoumaru would protect Japan.

Update when you can. I guess the chunks of pages make a better “chapter” story, you know?

    1. Thank you so much! I’m so glad you like it. ^_^
Yeah, I think what modern magical characters do during war is hugely important in paranormal fantasy. If you have a bunch of superpowered supernaturals running around, they’d be involved. So how is it Japan still lost? Well, either America brought their supernaturals along to fight too (totally possible), or superior weaponry and technology trumped the magic.

      Which totally works.
Antiaircraft fire is powerful. It annoys me when an author is all “our vampires can’t be hurt by modern bullets”, etc (I just read a novel like that). Um, if they still have flesh, bullets will damage them! Might not stop them, but will damage. And I don’t care what kind of creature you are, if you’re hit by an atom bomb, you’re gone.

Buffy did it right: 1st or 2nd season, a modern weapon totally blew apart a bigbad demon vamp. And on the other side, in Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series, the Inca and Aztec had dragons, so they’re still in power in South America, the Spanish weren’t able to defeat them.
That type of issue is one urban/paranormal fantasy writers really need to address. If the Native Americans had powerful magic creatures, how did they lose to the Europeans and America ever get founded?

lol I went off. Obviously, this is an issue that bugs me when authors don’t address it. :]

Several page updates seems to be the consensus, so I’m just going to try to get a little bit done every week amid everything else I’m doing, and hopefully I can get this story going again. 🙂

  6. I am seriously so excited that you updated that I don’t know I can express it any other form but .gif form:
Hula Hoop Owl Gif - Hula Hoop Owl!

This was a good update, I must admit I was wondering about how the Seiken family did during WWII. This segment answered and gave so many questions! Like does Sesshoumaru not want to deal with Catherine because he does not want to go through Jia-Lin again? Or because she’s American? or here unto unknown option 3? I am looking forward to your next update even more (which I did not know was possible) just to see how or if the Catherine/Sesshoumaru relationship works out. Especially since Catherine is a modern American woman and probably has ideals much different then what Sesshoumaru has seen with his past wives.

Spectacular artwork (I especially love their poses on page 11, so natural with the exhaustion/exasperation and her interest) and I hope we don’t have to wait another two years for an update! I am torn between what I wish for an updating schedule. I love the huge hunks (makes it worth it) but I would like to see it updated more often. My suggestion is update in huge hunks (like you have) but maybe set a deadline for yourself, like if I don’t have the segment finished in 6 months (or a year, etc), I’ll update what I have. But whatever you decide, I’ll be here.

    Keep up the good work!

    1. Hee! I’m so glad you like it! Cute owl.

There are a few more issues for Sess to get over that I will reveal in the next pages. I’m working on them now. Hopefully I can get them done in a MUCH more timely manner.

I like that 6 month deadline. I’m going to use it.
      Thank you!

  7. Oh gosh, this is emotional. Genken looked like a nice kid, too.

Still loving these dips into the Seiken’s past &heart; And that partial transformation shot of Sesshomaru, omg. There’s an awesome feel to that whole scene – like the stories the pilots would tell of strange unexplained lights following their planes and such.

Hmm. Well, personally I think you ought to post updates however is easiest for you 🙂 Each page is definitely worth the wait, IMO!

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad you like it!

We’re almost done with all the history (well, mostly), which I’m totally excited about because I have to research modern stuff SO MUCH LESS! *collapses*

  8. *wild applause*

FABULOUS! Excellent handling of WWII – love the way that Sess’ eyes were coloured against the greyscale!

Ooooh, all that background and Catherine being American in this round…! *giddy with anticipation*

I really liked reading all of this at once; it’s like a manga chapter being released where you can see the progression and really get into the plot.

    1. Thank you so much, Fenik! I’m so glad you like it. ^___^

You know I’m not great at getting things done, >.<, but I'm going to try to get this off the ground again.

  9. Happy that Dogwood Blossoms has been updated. Love the story. Please keep the updates coming.

    1. I’m so glad you like it! I’m going to try. 🙂

  10. I’m so glad you updated this comic 😀 about the updating system, do as you like, i don’t really care as long as there are new updates ^^

    1. I’m glad you like the comic! 🙂 I’m gonna try to get some updates out there.

  11. I like viewing it in several page chunks!

    1. “Several page updates” seems to be the consensus. I’m gonna try to get them out in a more timely manner. 🙂

  12. UGH! I don’t mean to pressure but I love this, keep going I’m a declared fan! 😀

    1. Thanks! I’m going to try. It’ll take me a few months for the next one, fair warning. But comments like this do motivate me. 🙂

      1. I’m glad you won’t postpone this project so, even if takes a few months I’m glad that I’ll read an update pretty soon! :w00t:

  13. This looks interesting, and I like the illustrations. I should read the whole story :pc:

  14. …EEEEEEEE! Took me exactly two panels to remember what this was and what was happening. After two years. You make it memorable! 😀
And I prefer whatever is easier for you. Really. (’cause if it’s easier, you don’t begrudge the work, and you’re more willing to do it!) 😀

    1. ps. LOVE that section that shows him turning “dog” under the mask. 😀

    2. I’m glad you remembered and enjoyed it. ^_^

      Looks like I’m going to go for batches, they’ll just take a while. ^^;

      1. At your own pace. I’m eager to see it whenever. 😀

  15. First, excellent installment! Given youkai existing and surviving into the 20th century they would have to be involved in WWII and you did a great job of showing why that didn’t make a difference in the outcome. The art is very powerful.

Second, on the question of waiting or posting as you finish each page, I don’t mind waiting to read several pages at once, in fact I actually wait and read several pages at once of other comics I follow even if they get updated a few times a week. I do absolutely hate having all the pages posted as one huge file and I’d love it if you would break them up when you do post no matter which way you decide. I’m on dialup, there IS no cable or DSL where I live, and by not having any other active tabs open and clearing the cache first I got this installment to load in readable size in about 10 minutes without having to refresh the page. Normally these posts hang up and I end up having to restart 2 or 3 times to get it to finish loading. I realize that an ever diminishing number of us have this issue but we are still out there.

Your stuff is worth the added effort to view so no matter what I’ll be here for the next installment.

    1. Thank you so much! ^__^

But oh my, I didn’t realize reading the comic could be so difficult! That’s awful, yike!

The pages are uploaded individually in my private gallery here:

That gallery doesn’t let me put them in order, so I usually don’t direct people there. But if you need them individually, just pay attention to their number order and you’d be able to read all of them. When I next post a Dogwood update, just go there to read it. 🙂

      1. Thanks! I’ll bookmark that.

  16. ah poor Sesshomaru! more please! :eager:

  17. It’s just as fantastic as I remember from 2 years ago, Rebecka-chan. Love the way you told the story and did the artwork. Loved how you showed the way Sessho-Maru dressed all in black ninja clothes using the legendary katana, Tensaiga which is the Guardian of Heaven. Keep up the wonderful job! =D

Have got to tell you I really do enjoy the columns you do of the DOGWOOD manga. I’m slowly working on a serious revamp of a 9-year-old comic I did as a 16-year-old Sophomore in high school. ;p Already got the 1st page of the rough draft is up on my DA Art Gallery. Nearly done with the 2nd page which will a RD (rough draft) before I start on the final draft of it. Little bit of a young Human woman/Gargoyle clan leader after they first meet one another. Any tips/suggestions would be awesome. I’m pretty slow at doing comics myself.:heart: Comics really do rock my world! =)

  18. i love this story so much

  19. i absolutely love this story continue it please

  20. this is an awesomely well done comic! I enjoy reading it in the page chunks. Seems to flow very well.

  21. I always enjoy having another read through this. I hope you manage to find time to continue it soon, your artwork is very refined and lovely.

  23. I love it! I like to read it in a chunk a single page leaves me hungry for more, but your method of several at once is nice I feel like I can wait for more this way

  24. I have just discovered this and am sooo glad you’ve just picked it back up. Please to continue at whatever pace makes you feel more comfortable!

  25. wen does the next come?? 😀

  36. ..forgot to add something; please keep up the current form of your comic. It’s really better and much more recognizable for readers that way.

  37. Really enjoy reading this.  Can’t wait for more! 🙂

  38. omg i need more :(….

  39. Need more
    Post the Next Chapter
My mind can’t take the wait

  40. I like this, but I feel like a Captain America reference is needed to make it even awesomer.

  41. Oh please continue this it’s so freaking good!

  42. Several large pieces of comics

  43. A covered in black vigilante Sesshomaru sounds beautiful. Especially his fur!s
WWII was a bad time and it’s great that you showed Sesshomaru’s family and his involvement in that era. They had times of glory and now it’s all falling down. Hope to see more of Mizuki’s story 🙂
