Dogwood Blossoms – Chapter 1: Catherine, p.01-05

Getting this started! This is the first post of Dogwood Blossoms, a Sess/Rin Inuyasha doujinshi/fancomic I've been working on.

Dogwood Blossoms is going to be a part-comic/part-prose Inuyasha manga-based fanfiction focusing on Sesshoumaru/Rin, and involving reincarnation, flashbacks, history, culture clashes, and multiple original characters. Sesshoumaru does not appear in the first chapter.

If you dislike fanfiction, fancomics, anime, Inuyasha, Sesshoumaru, Sess/Rin, or OCs, PLEASE IGNORE anything marked DOGWOOD in my postings from now on.

If you're okay with any of those, please do check it out, I think it going to be pretty cool. XD

Acknowledgments and Disclaimer: The fate of no one historical was changed by the making of this comic. Inuyasha-tachi belong to Takahashi Rumiko and everyone she has sold them to. This is a mostly nonprofit fan work that I’m really slowly putting too much work into because I'm a pathetic period-accuracy purist. All historical inaccuracies are the fault of myself--some deliberate, the rest out of ignorance. There is only so much time a girl can put into research for a fan project. Many thanks to the beta group for their help and suggestions.

  1. You know, that’s a good font choice for the thoughts. Despite not being one of the smallcaps fonts, it works.

Another thought, since I’m still not sure I like the font for spoken dialogue…. You differentiate thoughts with square boxes and thought bubbles, so why not use the same font for both?

For my own webmanga, I use Blambot’s Anime Ace font for both thoughts and dialogue, and differentiate between the two with the presentation of the speech bubbles, so that could work for you to. As another suggestion.

But this does look better, since the serif font was reduced to credits/page numbers only.

  2. Love how Inuyasha’s decidedly “not pretty” and the panel where Kagome yells at him. And the baseball cap was a hilariously nice touch 😀

    1. Thanks! ^^

I’m trying to go a little more realistic on these anime characters. 🙂

  3. This is just totally adorable. That “stare” panel just cracked me up! I love your character designs to pieces. I can’t wait to see more of this!

    1. XD I’m so glad you are liking it! ^__^

I’m quite excited about it, so that abodes well for me getting pages done!

  4. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

This rocks. You’re on my watch list now.

    1. Yay! Glad you’re liking it. ^^

  5. He. Very meaty Inuyasha. Why is Rin half-blooded in this?

    1. :] I like’m solid.

      Rin’s full human, waht?
I’ve made her American because I wanted to have at least one character from a culture I actually know. She’s the only one I won’t have to do any research on.

I made her half-Japanese in ethnicity because I think Sesshoumaru will have a hard enough time with her being American, without her being a weird-eyed blonde as well. 🙂
And that’s the short of it.

I’ll check the font. I rather like the one I’m using.
      Thanks! ^^

      1. I just worry because Eurasian girls are considered rather ugly in Asian culture. Big noses, gauche manners and unexpectedly heavy hair growth in certain areas is a big turn-off. They simply aren’t very forgiving to someone who looks like they should be just like them but isn’t. So it causes problems. That’s what I meant by half-blood, it’s thought of as weird and a bit suspect.

By all means suit yourself, the font seems a tad spare though in an area that could use a slight serif is all.

        1. Oh, no problems with solid. For God’s sake not squishy!

        2. “Got it in one shot. Sorry Sure it can add to the story. Now use it to the max.”

          That was you, right?

When I was designing her character, I was thinking it would be worse if she was full-blooded Japanese, and had been raised American. Then when she spoke with a weird accent and acted non-Japanese, it would have been even a greater shock. With her half-blooded, there would at least be a pre-indication that she would be different. Because I wasn’t going to have her be born in Japan, that was for sure. 🙂

I’m going to be exploring “otherness” (at least trying!) in several ways in this. Thank you so much for your input. ^^

        3. Just make sure to have everybody around her giving weird looks and behaving as though she were suspicious and I will be happy. Off to voice Sessh.

        4. lol, okay, I’ll try. I keep wanting to have her holler “Gaijin SMASH!!” somewhere, but I haven’t figured out where yet. XD

          And good luck!

        5. I hadn’t really heard that. *sigh* So being completely different is better then being too close but not close enough? (Research is just never enough…)

Ah well, one more thing for them to have to work through!

        6. Got it in one shot. Sorry Sure it can add to the story. Now use it to the max.

  6. Beautiful! And such a great idea too! I love it, and I ADORE reincarnation themes. Do you mind if I watch so I can read your updates?
    Love the character design, btw.

    1. Thank you! Watch away!

I love reincarnation themes too. XD

  7. Do you mind if I watch so I can read your updates?

    Ditto!

fenikkusuken rec’d this in her journal… Would you mind if I friended you?

    1. Do do! Thanks, Miss Cat. ^__^

  8. I was sent over here by Feni (fenikkusuken) and I’m glad she brought me over. You’re quite talented! Plus, I get a kick out of the fact that Rin’s Scotch-Irish (so am I!). Looking forward to the next installment…may I friend?

    1. Friend friend away!
      Thank you so much. ^^

  9. Hi! I came here following Quirky’s lead. And I have to say I’m in love with your doujinshi. Your expressions are wonderful and you have such style in your art. Do you mind if I add you to my friend’s list?

    1. Thanks! ^^ Add away!
Where’s your icon from? It’s snazzy.

      1. 😀

Are you familiar with Okami? The guy is Bakugami, a boar god of fire, in human form. (I found the pic on a random site).

        1. Oh, cool. I totally want to play that game. It looks GORgeous. And mythic Japanese, which makes it even better.

        2. If you ever get a chance, get this game. It’s so addictive. And all the pretty will blow your mind. It’s like a live action watercolor or ink painting.

        3. Oh, the pretty. Love the pretty.
          It’s totally on my list!

  10. YAY! Great job on it! I  both Inu-Yasha & Kagome!

  11. O.O Holy WHOAH!! *fangirl fit*

Can I just say WOW, and WOW!! This is BEYOND awesome!! =D I’m so happy someone so talented is a Sess/Rin-shipper! I am SO watching you from now on! [In a non-creepy, non-stalker kind of way. XD]

    1. XD Thanks! Glad you like it. ^^

      Welcome. 🙂

  12. Loved how you captured InuYasha inherent distrust and possessive protective nature!

  13. This is beautiful in detailing as far as comics go. Especially from fanart! I stumbled across this, being a Sess/Rin fan myself, and was surprised to see the quality compared to other quick-sketch panels.
Also I noticed the artwork looks more western-ish. An interesting concept with a manga piece, but still well done. Especially because the more realistic look contributes greatly to the more intricate expressions! I appreciate the design, now onto the next!
